In late May, SVYC hosted and ran the Infrastructure Industry Foundation (IIF) annual charity regatta, this year being run in aid of the Seaview Sailing Trust. A record entry of 16 teams from 13 firms chartered the mermaids, each racing either 6 or 7 of the 8 races. Boats were auctioned in aid of SST, raising in excess of £30,000 for the charity.

Teams faced testing conditions, with a stiff north-westerly breeze holding all day, varying in strength from 11kn to 24kn as different fronts blew through. Racing was extremely close, with less than a minute separating all 13 boats after the end of one 25 minute race. A round robin between all teams was completed in the morning session, followed by three more points races in the afternoon, the last of which incorporated the cup race for the Ella Simonds Trophy. Congratulations to the Campbell Lutyens team (ably assisted by Seaview helm Noel Dobbs) who won both the points series and the final Cup race.

The Race Team provided high quality, short sharp racing throughout, and, despite the conditions, an amazing time was had by all. The club looks forward to hosting the regatta again next year. If your company might be interested in chartering the mermaids, please get in touch at mermaids@svyc.org.uk, or for more information about donations to SST please email sst@svyc.org.uk.
