Cruisers
Who we are
The SVYC Cruiser Class is home to yachts of all shapes and sizes with racing, rally cruises and a busy social calendar. The class was originally set-up in 1987 as an informal group of yacht owners and charters by James Maitland who organised rallies within the Solent and English Channel. In 2007 Julian Lakin and his wife the current Vice Commodore Penny Mattinson took over, running popular rallies to Devon, Cornwall, the Isles of Silly and Brittany. In 2014, there was a memorable trip to Normandy during the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings.
The Class Today
Michael Smith is now the Cruiser Class Captain and Jonathan King is the Cruiser Racing Captain.
Racing and general sailing
The class runs a number of races for yachts during August, including a race around the Nab Tower and back. A big occasion for our class members is the Otter Cup during the Seaview Village Regatta and there are usually a handful of yachts among the keelboats on the start line - a truly wonderful sight! We are really keen to encourage newcomers to all of these events.
