Who we are

The SVYC Cruiser Class is home to yachts of all shapes and sizes with racing, rally cruises and a busy social calendar. The class was originally set-up in 1987 as an informal group of yacht owners and charters by James Maitland who organised rallies within the Solent and English Channel. In 2007 Julian Lakin and his wife the current Vice Commodore Penny Mattinson took over, running popular rallies to Devon, Cornwall, the Isles of Silly and Brittany. In 2014, there was a memorable trip to Normandy during the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings.

The Class Today

Nick and Jenny Stuart have looked after the class since 2016 and have instigated a biennial Mediterranean rally visiting venues such as Croatia, the Greek Ionian islands plus Sardinia and Corsica. In 2022 the class will visit Majorca in September. The class provides a basic itinerary with three or four pre-arranged dinners, leaving boats otherwise free to explore the region. The class continues to hold summer and winter social events, including the popular February dinner at the Royal Thames Yacht Club.

Racing and general sailing

The class runs a number of races for yachts during August, including a race around the Nab Tower and back. A big occasion for our class members is the Otter Cup during the Seaview Village Regatta and there are usually a handful of yachts among the keelboats on the start line - a truly wonderful sight! We are really keen to encourage newcomers to all of these events.

Dodecanese Rally: 17 24 September 2022

Rally organisers:  Nick and Jenny Stuart

The Dodecanese are the 12 islands surrounding Kos along the Turkish coast.  From fjord like bays to wild anchorages in turquoise waters, from sleepy harbours to rustic restaurants, these islands have so much to offer.

The rally will explore a host of different islands, each with its own unique character and all steeped in history.  Kos is the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of medicine and it was an important stopping off point for the Crusaders.  More recently, Mussolini controlled the Eastern Mediterranean from Laki where his art deco legacy remains. Tiny churches and monasteries are dotted all over the islands.

The rally will start in Kos, a short hop from Bodrum or a direct EasyJet flight from Gatwick. There are a number of yacht charter companies based in Kos.

Itinerary in summary

The prevailing wind is NNW.

Leaving Kos, the rally will we will make its way to windward in the lee of Kalimnos to Leros.

Then to Lipsi and Arki before a reach over to Patmos and a final run down the western side of Kalymnos and back to Kos.

Social programme

Jenny and Nick will organise some restaurant dinners and suggest possible anchorages where all the boats can meet up for more informal socialising.

If you would like more information on how to join in, please email or call.

This rally is open to any member, and you are welcome to bring non-members as crew. If you would like to join but don't have the relevant experience or qualifications then please email the class captain so that we can try and match you up with others.

Have a go

Most big boat sailors started in dinghies or smaller keelboats and moved to chartering before taking the plunge and buying a yacht. Class members have a wealth of experience to share and are very keen to encourage more members into big boats. We would like to explore initiatives such as training weekends, run by external charter/training companies such as Sunsail, exclusively for SVYC members.  These could either be an opportunity to improve your boat handling skills or an introduction to crewing. If you are interested in finding out more please get in touch via email.
