The SVYC Academy trains about 600 Members of Sea View Yacht Club every year, and has been training Members formally since 1985, in a wide variety of Sailing and Sailing Related activities! We cater for adults and children, and are here for you so if the advertised dates don't work for you please talk to us, we are very flexible and are happy to make bespoke courses for you.
Jon Curtis - RYA Centre Principal & Chief Instructor
Jon joined SVYC in 2003 having been Chief Instructor at UKSA, The Oysterhaven Centre, and Alexander's International School before joining us. Jon is a RYA Dinghy Coach Assessor with Multihull, Keelboat and Racing endorsements, RYA Powerboat Trainer, RYA SRC Assessor, RYA First Aid Instructor, RYA Diesel Engine Instructor, RYA Shorebased Navigation Instructor, RYA Race Officer and RYA Centre Inspector who has been teaching / training Instructors for over 20 years. He is responsible for overseeing all activities afloat.
Michele Reader - Membership Secretary.
Michele joined SVYC in 2004 and is responsible for handling all of your training course bookings and guiding you onto the right courses.
Zoe Wirdnam - Assistant Chief Instructor
Zoe joined SVYC in 2017 having been a lead Instructor at UKSA, Chief Instructor for Brading Haven Yacht Club and a freelance Race Training Instructor working at various different Yacht Clubs and Centres before joining us. Zoe is a RYA Senior Instructor Dinghy with Keelboat, Multihull and Racing Endorsements and RYA Powerboat Instructor.
The Green Shirts - Our Instructional Team.
During the season there are 150 + members of this team who are employed to teach in different areas of the Club. Each Instructor is qualified as either a RYA Assistant Instructor, RYA Dinghy Instructor, RYA Keelboat Instructor, RYA Multihull Instructor, RYA Senior Instructor or RYA Powerboat Instructor. We stick to RYA guidelines for Ratios which means normally an Instructor to Student ratio of 1 : 6 but often this is nearer to 1:3.

To train Members of Sea View Yacht Club in Sailing (Particularly Racing) and Sailing Related activities, enabling them to improve their ability or learn the skills needed to impart their knowledge on to other members, all whilst having fun on the water in a safe manner.

We try never to stand still and so we are constantly upgrading our fleet of 12 x Optimists, 6 x Toppers, 12 x RS Teras, 28 x Picos, 6 x Lasers, 5 x RS Fevas, 3 x RS Visions, 3 x Buzzes and 3 x Dart 16s. This varied comprehensive fleet has allowed us to dramatically improve what we are able to deliver. These craft ensure we have a fresh exhilaration feel to all of our training courses, be it Instructor training, team racing or crewed boat training. The boats and our amazing boat park provide an easy solution to getting afloat quickly to make the most of the fun, fast and competitive world of sailing, or let you just go for a nice cruise if racing is not your bag!
