Mermaids Locked in Duel as Mitchell and Simonds Share the Lead

Some of the tightest racing of the Royal Thames Yacht Club's 250th Anniversary Regatta unfolded today in the Seaview Mermaid class. Reveling in brisk Solent conditions east of Norris Point, the fleet battled through two testing races that have left the top of the leaderboard on a knife-edge.

Jimbo Mitchell, helming Halluf, and Colin Simonds in Adastra are tied at the top, with both sailors recording a win and a second place on the day. With discards applied, Mitchell narrowly edges ahead on countback thanks to a better dropped score.

Ben Few-Brown aboard Miranda holds third overall, just one point clear of Charles Youngman in Bluebell. Its all to play for going into the final day, with the chasing pack of Amethyst, Cynthia, and Bluebell bunched closely together and ready to pounce.

For the Classics, Cruisers and Seaview Mermaids, the Race Committee set courses using laid marks in the central Solent. The impressive spectacle of multiple fleets in full flight earned high praise from RTYC Vice Commodore Tom Partridge, who observed:

It was a classic Solent day the sort of sailing that true racers enjoy. It was extremely impressive to watch the fleets and the level of sailing right across them, from the Classics to the Cruisers, the Admirals Cup teams, and the one-designs. It truly was a superb day on the water.
