On Sunday, May 4th, the annual team racing event between Sea View Yacht Club (SVYC) and The Bar Yacht Club unfolded on the waters of Seaview in the iconic Mermaids. The day was marked by intense competition, camaraderie, and the spirit of sailing that both clubs hold dear.
The event featured two flights of six boats each, with teams setting out in the morning under a moderate NNE breeze. From the very first race, it was clear that both clubs were equally determined to claim victory. The morning session saw eight fiercely contested races, many of which came down to the wire. By lunchtime, SVYC had established a commanding lead with a 6-2 advantage.
After breaking for a fantastic lunch at the club, where sailors and supporters alike recharged with delicious food and lively conversation, the teams returned to the water for the final four races. The afternoon session proved equally thrilling, with The Bar Yacht Club rallying to even the score at 2-2 in the afternoon series. However, SVYC's strong morning performance secured an overall victory with a final score of 8-4, allowing the club to retain the coveted trophy.
A huge thank you goes out to the race management team—Nick, Adele, and Rupert—whose seamless coordination ensured a successful event. Special recognition is also due to the umpires, Jeremy and Robert, for their expert adjudication, and to The Bar Yacht Club for their exceptional sportsmanship and contribution to an exhilarating day of team racing.
The SVYC team, comprising Ben Few Brown, David Craven, Nick and Sue Wakefield, Jonny King and Jimmy Spence, Ian Prideaux and Josephine Smith, Sam and Andy Steward, and Jimbo Mitchell and Charlie Youngman, demonstrated skill, teamwork, and determination throughout the day. Their collective effort not only secured the win but also highlighted the strength and depth of sailing talent within the club.
Congratulations to all involved for making the event a memorable one. Here's to another year of friendly rivalry and outstanding sailing!
