Sam Steward and Izzy Smith win the RYA British Youth Nationals 20202 in Nacra 15.

Sam Steward SVYC member and his crew Izzy Smith took firsts place in the recent RYA British Youth Nationals in the NACRA 15 class the pathway boat to the NACRA 17 olympic boat. After 4 days of racing The team had won 9 out of 13 races going into the final day on Friday, but the second place team had been staying in the top 3 and was only 5 points behind. The final day forecast showed increased wind and the rig was tuned accordingly, but unfortunately the wind never arrived, making staying ahead of the closet rival trickier, and they took the first race with Sam and Izzy keeping the gap small in 3rd. Knowing he had a better discard situation a tactical race showing calmness under pressure put the top two teams into 6th and 7th place and allowed Sam to discard his 7th and widen the gap. It was not until this point that the series win was confirmed and the last race could be sailed without any pressure.

Sam and Izzy will continue training in the Nacra 15 and will be heading to the Worlds in mid August. This year will also see the team with the help of the RYA transition to the Nacra 17 Olympic Class and start he journey of their ambition to represent GBR at the highest level.
