The Latest Mermaid News

Published 13:13 on 8 Apr 2022

Though clearly many of our thoughts will currently be with others and geo-political events way out of our control, the 2022 season is fast approaching and I wanted to take this opportunity to update sailors on our amazing multi coloured fleet.

Nick and his team have done a marvelous job refitting the boats and all will be back in the water by 20th April. Bookings for the Midweek Shakedown races are now open and presuming our new normal will involve elements of work from home, hopefully these (and the rest of the midweek racing) will prove as popular as last year.

The Cowes week draw is also open and please sign up if you fancy taking part in this spectacular, world-famous regatta. The draw will take place in the Club Bar on Easter Sunday at 1230hrs. Do come along if you'd like to attend in person. For details of the draw protocols and entry requirements please see Mermaids Booking protocols on Club site.

Following last season's success with the Robb development series, we will be continuing these and indeed running Mermaid Refresher courses for those that want a bit of a brush up on getting the best out of the boats and of course the rules! The dates for these are still slightly TBC but will be made live by Easter again watch out on the club site under Calendar. (I will also circulate on the Robb and Mermaid WhatApps.)

Ladies that Launch will return with hopefully, dates in both July and August. Watch the club calendar and WhatApps for dates once they are confirmed.

In light of hopefully many of us being able to WFH this summer, we are introducing Friday evening races during June and July (to be known as Thomas Races to honour David Thomas the IOW yacht designer, who oversaw the transition of our fleet to Fiberglass hulls in the early 90s). Again, bookings are already open on the club site under calendar.  Our current thinking is that in block booking terms, we will combine the Friday Thomas race with the Summer Season block booking, but will keep this matter under close review.

Speaking of Block Bookings, as ever the early bird deadline is COP Easter Monday.

The more astute of you will notice that there has been a slight increase in the cost of block bookings this year. As you will all appreciate inflation in the UK is running at its highest rate since the mid 70s - and any of you who own other boats will appreciate that Marine Service inflation is running at an even higher rate than CPI. FYI we capped midweek sailing costs at 5% whilst increasing the cost for the summer series by 10% (get out and sail in the Thomas Races and you'll be ahead in real time value!)

Keep healthy and pray for all those in peril on and off the sea…
