Latest News
 from the Handicap Dinghy Class

The Handicap Dinghy Class are delighted to remind everyone that daily racing has started, continuing until early September. This year we are back with 10 brand new trophies to be won for cup races throughout the season (thanks to our amazing trophy donors) and we look forward to seeing you out on the water soon! This year the start times are:

11:00 Slow Handicap (for Opis, Picos, Terras, SVODs, Fevas and anything in between)

11:30 Fast Handicap (for Lasers of all sizes, visions and anything faster (yes we are looking at you Wasp sailors!))

Please note for the first week, the races are combined so we get more boats on the start line, at 11:30. We have our class supper, free-drink-after-racing days and of course Solent Surge lined up too; more details will be announced in due course. Our weekend evening racing starts Saturday 23 July with a 1615 start time, and this year will be coached races to provide an easy entry point to those looking for a way into the class with a little more guidance! Again more information will follow later in the month.

More information available through the Handicap Class WhatsApp [link to] or via the Class Captains, so dust off your dinghies, and we look forward to seeing you all on the start line!

Who we are

The Handicap Class is the home for dinghies of all shapes and sizes in Seaview. We race under the Portsmouth Yardstick handicap system, providing consistent and fair racing for everyone. The class was founded in the 1960s and has since incorporated Albacores, Merlin Rockets, Cherubs, Fireballs and Mirrors today we provide a home to an extensive Laser fleet, regularly racing alongside other dinghies from Picos to 49ers, and everything in between.

The Class today

There are two daily race starts one for the fast boats, with another for the slower classes, ensuring racing is always as tight as possible between dinghies of a close handicap. The slow handicap race includes Optimists, Picos, Terras, Fevas and Sea View One Designs, while the fast handicap race is the home of the Seaview Laser fleet, as well as RS Visions and the occasional 49er. The class hosts several social events throughout the season, including class drinks and an annual supper.

Racing & other sailing

We run a full racing schedule throughout July, August and early September. A continuous summer points series runs from early July through to the August bank holiday, with a separate series in early September. Cup races and regattas are common throughout the summer season. You can find race times and notice or race here. The class also hosts open events for East Wight Combined Clubs members and others, such as the International Laser Grand Prix. Details of these can be found here.

Have a go

The Handicap Class is growing every year, and we strongly encourage new sailors looking for a fun way of getting out racing, or those who want to practice their newly learnt skills from one of the Clubs training courses, to come and join us. The yacht club has over 60 dinghies available for members to hire - these can be booked by getting in touch with Michele and Jon in the Clubs office. Our Class Captains are always available to help and our Handicap Class WhatsApp group is great way to keep up-to-date with all the latest information you can find details for this on the class noticeboard in the Club. See you on the start line!
