RYA Dinghy Instructor Course

All Dinghy Instructor Courses run for 5 days, following a Pre-entry Sailing Assessment (1 day) with an RYA Dinghy Trainer using an RS Vision, Pico, or Laser.

You may book both together or separately — its recommended to complete the Pre-entry Assessment in advance.

This intensive course requires a high standard and may include evening work. Successful candidates qualify to teach at RYA dinghy schools worldwide. Training covers the RYA Method, teaching techniques, practical sessions, presentations, and basic racing tuition (with potential for RYA Racing Instructor qualification).

Courses use the clubs dinghy fleet: Optimist, Topper, RS Tera, Pico, Laser 4.7, RS Feva, RS Vision, Buzz, Dart 16.
If unfamiliar with any class, contact the office to arrange a trial or private lesson.

Pre-entry Assessment: requires 11+ knots of wind; valid for one year. Alternative boats may be used by arrangement with Jon Curtis.

Minimum age: 16 (open to adults).

  • RYA Safe & Fun (included in DI course request login via training@svyc.org.uk)
  • Advised: RYA SRC (VHF) Certificate online course included free within DI course price.

Please note that Prior to an Instructor Course candidates must attain the following:
RYA Membership, Pre-Entry Assessment, RYA Powerboat Level 2, First Aid Certificate, RYA Safe & Fun, and be a Minimum age of 16.

This Ticket is for both the 1 day Pre-entry Sailing Assessment Day and also the 5 day Dinghy Instructor Course.

For the Pre-entry Sailing Assessment Day, you will need to be able to sail an RS Vision: rudderless around a triangle, picking up a mooring (wind against tide), coming alongside, anchor, sail in tight circles, reef afloat, recover a MOB , sail backwards and launch and recover from a lee shore. Note: These skills require practice before the event!
