Succession Committee

As part of the feedback received from members over the summer of 2020, a number of requests were made for more transparency and diversity in the Club appointments. In light of this feedback, in October 2020 we launched the Succession Committee. The role of this group is to enable a more transparent process and communication around future positions in the Club, to allow us to do a better job at finding members who want to contribute, and to match them to the roles that need to be filled. The Succession Committee's role is to gather members suggestions. The eventual appointment decisions are made by the General Committee and, where applicable, the membership at an AGM.

The Succession Committee Terms of Reference

The Succession Committee consists of the Commodore, the two Trustees, a former Commodore and two other members as may be determined by the General Committee. Apart from the ex officio
members, namely the Commodore and the Trustees, the members of the Committee are appointed for a four-year term and should represent a cross section of the Club. The Committee is chaired by one of the Trustees.

The role of the Succession Committee is:

1. To manage a pipeline of future Flag Officers and members of all the Committees. This should be designed so that Members can understand how the Club operates by progressing through Club roles.

2. To consider the scope of various roles for available Members in light of expected workload and their skills and to make recommendations to the General Committee on any changes. This could involve roles being adjusted for individuals whether on a split or combined basis.

3. To build an understanding as to which Members have an interest in being part of the Clubs leadership and what skills they could offer.

4. To bring greater transparency to the process of nominating individuals for roles and to communicate with Members, in particular over what vacancies in the various roles exist or may be  forthcoming so that Members are encouraged to contact a member of the Committee if they are interested in playing a leadership role in the Club.
