Sea View One Design Class

Who we are

The Seaview Dinghy class is an inclusive, family-oriented and integral part of the Sea View Yacht Club, both on-the-water and, with a vibrant social scene, off it as well. The fleet of some 200 classic boats, Sea View One Design dinghies - commonly known as SVODs - sail throughout the July and August season, with races and events for every generation and style of sailor. During the summer, the boats live on swinging moorings dotted along the coastline - an iconic sight from the Seaview waterfront.

Founded in 1931, all of the boats were hand-built in Seaview and many have been owned by the same family for decades, having been passed down through generations of sailors. Many of us grew up crewing our parents, and now take our children out racing and cruising in the same way. That said, there is a thriving second-hand SVOD market and the class can help find you the perfect boat to begin your family Seaview Dinghy tradition.

The class today

We are a strict one-design class and the boats remain faithful to their original design - with the hull, spars and rudders remaining wooden, while embracing some more up-to-date elements: running rigging; self bailers; the use of electronic compasses; and Hyde Sails modern technology for the mainsail and jib. You can find out more about the SVOD Class history here.

Racing and general sailing

The class has a packed racing calendar through the July and August season with two daily evening races: a short inshore course for the Victory fleet starting at 1700; and a committee boat start at 1730 for the Amber fleet - expect some very tight, competitive one-design racing! We also hold day or weekend-long regattas with back-to-back Olympic courses plus morning races as part of the Slow Handicap fleet - increasingly popular with parents taking young children out as crew. Our trophy cabinet is stacked full of historical prizes for overall points series, regattas and individual big-draw races. All that racing, alongside cruises and training - theres something for every sailor.

Have a go

We are really keen to encourage new sailors into SVODs. The class owns its own Seaview Dinghy which is available for charter and we can arrange for an instructor to crew you during a race or a straightforward free sailing trial can also be arranged. We run a busy training schedule throughout the summer with several week-long courses and ad-hoc training: available as half-day group or individual sessions throughout the summer.
