Levelling up - from Harriet Hadfield's 5 stories

Last week we learnt some details - amidst the never-ending "partygate" scandal - of the Government's Levelling Up White Paper. And the interesting   news   for the Island is that we are to be included among dozens of areas set to receive extra support for education. Alongside Portsmouth and Dorset, the Island has been identified in the 55 cold spots across England where education outcomes are the weakest. Speaking on his

Setting boundaries - from Harriet Hadfield's 5 stories

As many will know, I'm quite into politics and I've written here before about the boundary change next year which will give us two MPs to vote for in the next likely General Election - bar a snap election - in May 2024. Burns Night Celebration

Gordon White (Bembridge Harbour Master and practiced Master of Ceremonies) took us through our ceremonial paces and wielded his knife so superbly (luckily our Head Chef survived a close shave with the blade!) the haggis didn't stand a chance!   Click here to see the video clip on Instagram Also special thanks to Suki and Graham Pountney for their reeling and thespian expertise and to Simon

Foodbank latest - from Harriet Hadfield's 5 stories

As we start to come out of the other side of the Covid pandemic, I wanted to reflect on an Island lifeline which has seen a huge increase in need over the past two years, as lockdowns have taken their toll on the most vulnerable families among us. The Isle of Wight   Foodbank   has shared some figures with 5-Stories which show an almost 40% increase in the number of adults and

We have therefore agreed to appoint two new captains to promote safety and develop events for motor boaters and Paddle Boards.  If you are interested, or want to nominate someone, please contact  or John Sandiford Haigh, the chair of the Succession Committee. Village Life - from Harriet Hadfield's 5 stories

The village of Seaview has been "effectively stripped out of permanent life due to 82% of properties being second homes"  that's according to Bob Seely, the Isle of Wight MP. Bob was quoted in the Daily Mail in an  article  about potential licenses for AirBnB landlords in rural communities, as an effort to free up housing for locals in popular tourist hotspots such as the Isle of Wight.

We had a fantastic evening thanks to Michelin starred chef Robert Thompson who ran a pop up restaurant at the Club on Saturday 31st October.

Robert Thompson shot to fame as the youngest British chef ever to receive a Michelin star. His light, fresh and classically inspired food showcases the island's wonderful fresh produce. Alongside his Newport restaurant Thompson's, Robert has recently launched UBchef, with his exceptional team producing premium restaurant meals delivered to your door nationwide. ( ). We were thrilled that Robert was able to cook a dinner for
