WASZPS on the Isle of Wight

On Saturday 6th August, the Isle of Wight WASZP fleet came together to race for the first time in what is believed to be the island's first dedicated foiling regatta. Boats from the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and Sea View Yacht Club gathered at Seaview for the island's first official class race. There are a lot of foiling classes out there, but the WASZP is the class that is bringing

    Cowes Classic Week 2022

As an experiment this year, six of the Mermaids joined the Cowes Classic Week regatta for two days at the end of June. This regatta, run by the Royal London Yacht Club, provides the opportunity for traditional yachts to experience Cowes sailing without quite so many boats. Metre boats, Classic Racing Dayboats and Yachts, Old Gaffers and Spirit of Tradition Yachts race varied central Solent courses. The Mermaid races were true windward/leeward courses

    Westmacott regatta

The Jubilee weekend saw a Regatta held to celebrate the Centenary of the 1922 Alfred Westmacott designed Mermaids, the  2nd generation of the Seaview Mermaid. The 3 remaining Seaview boats were joined by other local Westmacott designed Classes, the Victories from Portsmouth Sailing Club and Bembridge One Designs from Bembridge. The strong winds meant that the planned 2 day Regatta was compressed into a single afternoon but all enjoyed the sailing off Seaview. To round off

    Hover-fly-past and Ships Salute - from Harriet Hadfield's 5-stories

Hovertravel is planning a unique fly-past for the Jubilee celebrations. On Friday a hovercraft will make a 70-mile trip around the Solent. Neil Chapman, managing director of Hovertravel tells me they are still finalising the details but: "This two-hour flight will see our hovercraft fly west to pass the Needles before looping back east to speed past Hayling Island and is Hovertravel's gesture of gratitude to Her Majesty for her 70 years of service to
